Undergraduate Program

 

You have three levels of requirements to earn a BA or a BS degree at UCR - University, College and Major. The requirements listed on this page pertain to the Chemistry major only. The full text of these requirements can be found in the UCR General Catalog.

General University Requirements

A minimum of 180 units of academic work with a grade point average of 2.00 in all courses undertaken in the UC is required for graduation.

College Requirements - CNAS

The College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) Undergraduate Academic Advising Center posts a pdf file of courses that will fulfill certain Breadth requirements. It is updated each Fall. These courses have no prerequisites. Anyone can enroll in these courses. It is located on their website at

Some College Breadth requirements, such as the Natural Sciences and Mathematics (20 units) are already fulfilled because they are also Chemistry Major requirements.

Required courses to fulfill College requirements for a BA (60+ units):

English Composition (12 units) (must be taken for a letter grade!)

  • English 001ABC (or 001SC) with grades of “C” or better for each course .

(Depending upon your ELWR placement, you must take an English course EVERY quarter until you have finished ENGL 001ABC!)


Humanities Breadth (20 units) (may be taken for a LG (Letter Grade) or S/NC (Satisfactory/No Credit))

  • One 4-unit course chosen from World History 10 or 15 or 20
  • One 4-unit course chosen from Art; Art History; Creative Writing courses in poetry, fiction, or playwriting; Dance; Music; Theatre; Literature courses in English, Comparative Literatures and Foreign Languages or Hispanic Studies; Philosophy; Religious Studies
  • Two 4-unit courses chosen from Literature, Philosophy or Religious Studies
  • One additional 4-unit course chosen from History, Fine Arts, Literature, Philosophy, Religious Studies; a foreign language at level 4 or above; Humanities courses offered by the following departments or programs (Ethnic Studies, Creative Writing (courses in journalism), Humanities and Social Sciences, Latin American Studies, Linguistics, Women’s Studies)


Social Science Breadth (16 units) (may be taken for a LG (Letter Grade) or S/NC (Satisfactory/No Credit))

  • One 4-unit course chosen from Economics or Political Science
  • One 4-unit course chosen from Anthropology or Psychology or Sociology
  • Two additional 4-unit course chosen from Economics; Political Science; Anthropology; Psychology; Sociology; Social Science courses offered by Ethnic Studies, Environmental Sciences, Geography (cultural geography courses), Human Development, Humanities and Social Sciences, Women’s Studies
 
  • Ethnic Studies (may be taken for a LG (Letter Grade) or S/NC (Satisfactory/No Credit). This requirement is included in either the Humanities or Social Science breadth unit count depending upon course content)
Breadth courses may be taken for a LG (Letter Grade) or S/NC (Satisfactory/No Credit). Satisfactory = grades of “C” or better; No Credit = grades of “C-“ or less. If you enrolled in a breadth course for a letter grade and received a grade of “D,” you will still get credit. BUT…if you enrolled in a breadth course on an S/NC basis and earned a grade of “D,” you will NOT get credit!
  • Foreign Language - up to level 4 in one language or up to level 2 in each of two languages (must be taken for a letter grade!)

 

Biological Sciences With Lab (4 units) (must be taken for a letter grade!)

One 4-unit course chosen from BIOL002, BIOL003, BIOL005A and BIOL05LA, BIOL005B, BIOL005C, BIOL010), BPSC031

Required courses to fulfill College requirements for a BS (60+ units):

Major Requirements - Chemistry

Required courses to fulfill Chemistry major requirements (114 units):
Chemistry (70 units)
Math (24 units)
Physics (20 units)

Letter grades are required for all Chemistry, Math, Physics, and Biology courses.

Course Credit Summary Sheets (1 page). A one page table of all the Chemistry and College Breadth courses required and taken for the different Chemistry Degrees. (These files are in pdf format, accessible using Adobe Acrobat Reader, available from http://www.adobe.com).
